The confusion is real. These three names are often used together, yet they represent very different stages and pathways in the Indian defence officer selection process. This guide breaks it all down \u2014 clearly and completely \u2014 so you can identify the right path based on where you are today in your education.<\/p>\n

Think of it this way: NDA and CDS are the written gateways. SSB is the final door every candidate must pass through, regardless of which written exam they cleared.<\/p>\n
The National Defence Academy exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year (NDA I in April and NDA II in September). It is the earliest you can enter the Indian Armed Forces as a commissioned officer \u2014 right after Class 12.<\/p>\n
Candidates who clear the NDA written exam and the SSB interview are admitted to the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Pune for a 3-year joint training programme, followed by 1 year of pre-commissioning training at their respective service academies (IMA, INS Zafarabad, AFA).<\/p>\n
