CDS vs NDA vs SSB: Which Defence Exam Is Right for You?

Every year, thousands of students from Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan, Dadar, and Palghar dream of wearing the uniform of an Indian Army, Navy, or Air Force officer. But one question stops many of them before they even begin: “Which exam should I appear for — NDA, CDS, or SSB?”

The confusion is real. These three names are often used together, yet they represent very different stages and pathways in the Indian defence officer selection process. This guide breaks it all down — clearly and completely — so you can identify the right path based on where you are today in your education.

SECTION 1: UNDERSTANDING THE THREE PATHWAYS AT A GLANCE

Before diving into details, here is how the three relate to each other:

  • → NDA (National Defence Academy) — Entry point for Class 12 students. Written exam conducted by UPSC.
  • → CDS (Combined Defence Services) — Entry point for graduates. Written exam conducted by UPSC.
  • → SSB (Services Selection Board) — NOT a separate exam. It is the personality and intelligence interview that all shortlisted NDA and CDS candidates must clear to become officers.

Think of it this way: NDA and CDS are the written gateways. SSB is the final door every candidate must pass through, regardless of which written exam they cleared.

SECTION 2: NDA — THE PATHWAY FOR CLASS 12 STUDENTS

What is NDA?

The National Defence Academy exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) twice a year (NDA I in April and NDA II in September). It is the earliest you can enter the Indian Armed Forces as a commissioned officer — right after Class 12.

Who Can Apply?

  • Educational Qualification: Passed or appearing in Class 12 (10+2) from any recognised board.
  • For Army: Any stream (Science, Commerce, Arts).
  • For Navy & Air Force: Must have Physics and Mathematics in Class 12.
  • Age: 16.5 to 19.5 years at the time of the exam.
  • Gender: Open to both male and female candidates (women were included from 2022 onwards).
  • Marital Status: Unmarried.

NDA Written Exam Pattern

  • Mathematics: 300 marks (120 questions)
  • General Ability Test (GAT): 600 marks (150 questions — covers English, GK, Physics, Chemistry, History, Geography, Current Affairs)
  • Total: 900 marks
  • Duration: 2.5 hours per paper
  • Negative marking: 1/3rd marks deducted per wrong answer

Training at NDA

Candidates who clear the NDA written exam and the SSB interview are admitted to the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, Pune for a 3-year joint training programme, followed by 1 year of pre-commissioning training at their respective service academies (IMA, INS Zafarabad, AFA).

Why NDA is Ideal for Mumbai/Thane Students

Starting preparation in Class 11 gives you a 2-year head start. With coaching from Margadarshak Defence Career Academy, students from Thane, Dadar, Kalyan, and Palghar have consistently cleared both the written exam and SSB, earning commissions at a young age of 21–22 years.

SECTION 3: CDS — THE PATHWAY FOR GRADUATES

What is CDS?

The Combined Defence Services exam is also conducted by UPSC twice a year (CDS I in February and CDS II in November). It is designed for candidates who have already completed or are in the final year of their graduation.

Who Can Apply?

  • For IMA (Indian Military Academy): Graduation in any discipline from a recognised university.
  • For INA (Indian Naval Academy): Engineering degree (BE/B.Tech).
  • For AFA (Air Force Academy): Graduation with Physics and Mathematics at Class 12 level OR an Engineering degree.
  • For OTA (Officers Training Academy): Graduation in any discipline (for Short Service Commission).
  • Age: 19 to 24 years for IMA, INA, AFA. 19 to 25 years for OTA.
  • Gender: Male for IMA, INA, AFA. Both male and female for OTA.

CDS Written Exam Pattern (IMA, INA, AFA)

  • English: 100 marks
  • General Knowledge: 100 marks
  • Elementary Mathematics: 100 marks
  • Total: 300 marks | Duration: 2 hours per paper

CDS Written Exam Pattern (OTA)

  • English: 100 marks
  • General Knowledge: 100 marks
  • Total: 200 marks (Mathematics not required)

Why Graduates from Navi Mumbai, Kalyan & Palghar Should Consider CDS

If you missed the NDA window, CDS is your ideal second chance. Many engineering and arts graduates from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region appear for CDS while completing their final year. Margadarshak Academy offers dedicated CDS coaching batches with focused preparation on GK, Mathematics, and English that aligns with the UPSC pattern.

SECTION 4: SSB — THE FINAL SELECTION STAGE FOR BOTH NDA & CDS

What is the SSB Interview?

The Services Selection Board (SSB) is a 5-day personality and intelligence assessment conducted at SSB centres across India. It is not a separate entrance exam — it is a mandatory selection stage that every candidate who qualifies the NDA or CDS written exam must clear.

SSB tests whether a candidate has the Officers Intelligence Rating (OIR) and the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) that the Indian Armed Forces look for.

The 5-Day SSB Process

Day 1 — Stage I (Screening Test)
  • Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) Test: Verbal and non-verbal reasoning
  • Picture Perception and Description Test (PPDT): Group discussion based on a hazy picture
  • Result announced the same day. About 40–60% candidates are screened out here.
Day 2 — Psychological Tests
  • Thematic Apperception Test (TAT): Stories written on 11 pictures + 1 blank slide
  • Word Association Test (WAT): 60 words in 60 seconds — write the first sentence that comes to mind
  • Situation Reaction Test (SRT): 60 real-life situations to respond to in 30 minutes
  • Self Description Test (SD): Write about yourself from others’ perspectives
Day 3 & 4 — Group Testing Officer (GTO) Tasks
  • Group Discussion (GD): Two rounds on topics given by GTO
  • Group Planning Exercise (GPE): Solve a scenario as a group
  • Progressive Group Task (PGT) and Half Group Task (HGT): Outdoor obstacle crossing
  • Individual Obstacles: 10 obstacles to be completed in order of difficulty
  • Command Task: Lead your group through an obstacle as commander
  • Lecturette: 3-minute speech on a topic chosen from 4 chits
Day 4 — Personal Interview (PI)
  • In-depth one-on-one interview with a Senior Assessor (Interviewing Officer)
  • Covers personal background, family, academics, hobbies, current affairs, motivation to join the forces
Day 5 — Conference
  • All three assessors (IO, GTO, Psychologist) meet the candidate for a final board conference
  • The candidate is informed of the result (Recommended / Not Recommended) the same day
